From SCCA and DIVA to Not Yet Written Stories

18th Luxury Cheap Films Festival
18 November 2020
Online workshop

Barbara Borčić, the former director of SCCA-Ljubljana and the first Head of DIVA Station, presented the Center for Contemporary Arts SCCA-Ljubljana with some of its previous projects and current activities. The programs concerning the center’s archiving practices, produced in frame of its video, new-media and film archive DIVA Station were presented in a more detail as well as the European project Not Yet Written Stories – Women Artists’ Archives Online. In addition, of course, we watched some documentary & art films and videos.

After presenting some of SCCA’s basic programs, e.g. the School of Curatorial Practices and Critical Writing entitled World of Art as the unique educational program in a broader region and media/video exhibitions, she focused particularly on the programs concerning the center’s archiving practices, produced in frame of its video, new-media and film archive DIVA Station. She led the participants through different segments: from a specialised media library and archive, Videodokument documentation project, and a number of curated and research programs Videospotting to educational seminars and exhibitions.

A special emphasis was put on the DIVA on-line archive with a hyper-textual database and search engine combined with open access to low-resolution artworks. The complexity of archiving practices was further presented by a video essay by Nika Grabar produced in the framework of the exhibition DIVA at Škuc Gallery in 2009. In connection with DIVA Station, SCCA has also become a partner of the European project Not Yet Written Stories – Women Artists’ Archives Online (2020–2022). The project focuses on women artists who have often been overlooked in the history of contemporary art and will create, through research, workshops and exhibitions the archives of artists available in a common European online repository (www.forgottenheritage.eu). Barbara Borčić, its co-manager together with Peter Cerovšek, outlined the SCCA part of the project with three women artists of different generations: Ana Nuša Dragan, Zemira Alajbegović and Ema Kugler. All the three women artists were/are active in the field of action, performance, film and video art in Slovenia. Later, some of the films and video works by these three artists were shown followed by the discussion.
