Established interdisciplinary artist Danilo Milovanović (aka DNLM) is known for his imaginative interventions in public space, which he presents in gallery spaces and online through photographs and video documentation of found, exhibited, and newly assembled street objects. The artist notices, exposes, and subverts the conflicting relationships between nature and the urban in a critical-humorous way. By intervening in public space, he creates new symbolic and actual relationships between various street and architectural objects, as well as their context and usability. With poetic activist gestures and a do-it-yourself approach, he demonstrates different ways of using them, thereby questioning the processes of gentrification and commercialization of city centers and thus addressing the problem of the gradual disappearance of shared public space. At the event, he will present video documentation of the many artistic interventions he has carried out in recent years.
After finishing high school in Prijedor (BiH), Danilo Milovanović (1992, Banja Luka) enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana, where he finished his BA and MA at the Department of Painting. He also studied at the UMPRUM Academy in Prague as part of a student exchange. In 2020, he received the UL ALUO Prešeren award for his master’s thesis with the title of the theoretical part Artivism – Engaged Urban Art in Public Space and the title of the practical part Top Parking. He has been nominated several times for the OHO Group Award. From 2019 to 2021, he was a resident in Švicarija (MGLC) in Ljubljana.
During his studies, he has already been active internationally. He participated in residencies and exhibitions in Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria. He managed the gallery space Zelenica in the Autonomous Factory Rog in Ljubljana (2012–2018). He presented himself in local galleries Aksioma, Tobačna 001, Škuc, Alkatraz, Ravnikar, Miklova hiša, Božidar Jakac, KIBLA, UGM, Center of Contemporary Arts Celje and MG+MSUM in Ljubljana. He participated in Light Guerrilla: Shadows and Reflections festival and was included in the 35th International Graphic Biennale at MGLC and the 10th Triennial of Contemporary Art – U3 at MG+MSUM in Ljubljana. Abroad, he participated in the BienalSur in Montevideo, the UrbanArt Bienal in Völklingen, the donumenta in Regensburg, the exhibition as part of the Risk Change project at the MMSU in Rijeka, and exhibited in the museums of contemporary art in Novi Sad and Banja Luka. He had solo exhibitions in the galleries U10 in Belgrade, Umprum in Prague, and Pop-up Schauraum in the MQ in Vienna. He lives and works in Ljubljana. At Video Evenings with DIVA Station, we host authors who are included in the archive and invite them to talk about their work and the background behind creating individual video projects. The presentation in the gallery (artist talk) is accompanied by projections with comments, followed by a conversation with the audience. The Video Evenings are prepared by Vesna Bukovec, a professional associate of the DIVA Station archive of video, film, and new-media art.
