SCCA-Ljubljana and the Slovenian Cinematheque in Split

Guest screenings of Slovenian avant-garde films and a master class by Karpo Godina
13th and 14th September 2024
Beton Kino, Ulica Slobode 28, Split, Croatia

In 2022, as part of the World AV Heritage Day, SCCA and the Slovene Cinematheque hosted the Cine Club Split (Kino klub Split) in Ljubljana. This year, we continue our cooperation with two evenings of screenings and talks in Split. The first evening will begin with the presentation of the DIVA Station archive and the guest-curated VideoGarden programme Landscapes, Spaces, which will be presented by Peter Cerovšek and Robert Kuret. The evening will end with the screening of the programme From the Avant-Garde Collections of the Slovenian Cinematheque: Everything is Spinning. In cooperation with the Slovenian Cinematheque, the second evening will be dedicated to one of the most important Slovenian directors and cinematographers, Karpo Godina, with whom Igor Prassel and Matevž Jerman will hold a conversation and opening remarks. The evening begins with a screening of his short, recently restored films and ends with a masterclass by Karpo Godina.

Landscapes, Spaces

Curator: Robert Kuret (SCCA-Ljubljana)

David Paige, Harnessing, 2023

The films deal with landscapes, both internal and external, in one way or another. If human characters or figures are present, they are part of the landscape rather than occupying the foreground; in this way, we establish a relationship to space, its dimensions, and the entities within it, which manifest themselves in different ways. Above all, humans manifest themselves through the traces of social arrangements that determine the ways and possibilities of moving through spaces.

Short films by Karpo Godina

Curator: Matevž Jerman (Slovenian Cinematheque)

Karpo Godina,Healthy People for Fun (Zdravi ljudi za razonodu), 1971

Karpo Godina’s short films are always marked by joyful playfulness, aesthetic perfection and often a subversive (and always witty) political note. This is evidenced by the series of black-and-white experimental films on 8mm, which he shot in the 60s as a student at the Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT), in which he explores the kinetic and technical capabilities of the camera-pen (caméra-stylo). His recognized author’s approach appeared in full glory shortly after Karpo replaced the small format with color 35mm and never looked back. In The Gratinated Brains of Pupilija Ferkeverk (1970), the camera tripod sinks into the muddy bottom of the Sečovlje salt pans, and then the principle of tableaux vivants is introduced in a groundbreaking way. In the space of a few years, he created a series of short films that today are considered to be some of the key short-film classics of black and Yugoslav film.
