No Nails, No PedestalsTomaž Furlan: Wear
Exhibition and presentation

Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at 8pm
SCCA Project Room, Metelkova 6, Ljubljana

The exhibition is open until June 24, Monday-Friday, 10am-3pm; by appointment only.

You are cordially invited to attend an exhibition and presentation of the work of Tomaž Furlan, who has been making a name for himself as a versatile multimedia artist. The exhibition and presentation were prepared by the critic and curator Miha Colner in collaboration with the artist.

Tomaž Furlan

Tomaž Furlan has been working on his sculptural and video project in progress, entitled Wear, since 2006. This is already the twelfth edition in the series. The artist says that Wear is “some sort of a critical reflection on the basic use of interactive works or, as it were, sculpture, which have emerged as extended body functions in a forced process”.

The video works from Wear are actually video performances created for the camera in a very simple, but efficiently monumental way, in which the artist is the creator of the whole process. The series includes unique personal confessions which the artist applies to the state of the contemporary world and connects to universal processes in society, alienation, mass production and consumption, which show how an individual is involved in the mechanism of different inevitable systems. In this way, Furlan questions the individual’s freedom to choose personal activities which are not necessarily suitable/appropriate/applicable, profitable or useful.

This will be the theme of the presentation within the cycle No Nails, No Pedestals by Tomaž Furlan, who will present a selection of his work, both videos and sculptures, on the occasion.

The show is open until Friday, 24 June in the SCCA Project Room.

Tomaž FurlanTomaž Furlan, born in 1978, has focused mainly on sculpture, video installations and video performance. The first constitutes his basic starting-point and is the result of the formal education he received at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. In his videos, he displays a simple and efficient approach to personal expression which upgrades his basic activity focused on objects. In the process of creation and presentation, both media are inseparably connected. The work of Tomaž Furlan is also closely connected to the AKC Metelkova City autonomous zone, where he has installed many sculptures, installations and useful structures available for use in recent years. He lives and works in Ljubljana and Škofja Loka.
