Press Play_Taking on PerformanceVideo Evening #01: Press Play_Taking on Performance

Artists: Inger Alfnes (NO), Alexandra Gerbaulet (DE), Jacqueline Forzelius (SE), Louise Menzies (NZ), Martine Stig (NL), Segundo de Chomón (ES), Ruth Buchanan (NZ), Ruth Legg (UK), Rajkumar Santoshi (IN)
Selected by: ADA Rotterdam (NL)
Total screening time: 01:04:52

Press Play_Taking on Performance is the second part of KOLEKTIVA, Calling? a video correspondence between ADA Rotterdam (NL) and KOLEKTIVA (SI).

As the first part of this correspondence, ADA hosted a film evening presenting KOLEKTIVA’s selection of art videos from the project Video in Progress 3: Fields of the Performative, which reflected on the subject of ‘performing for the camera’.

KOLEKTIVA’s selection included videos featuring various formal and conceptual premises present in heterogeneous interpretation of performance in relation to motion picture within contemporary visual art. It is in response to this selection of videos, the Fields of the Performative, that ADA has in turn prepared their video response back to KOLEKTIVA. The resulting collection of videos is entitled Press Play_Taking on Performance.
It is a self-organized, independent artists initiative formed in September 2008 to support, nurture, stimulate and to create space for critical reflection and debate in and about art, in an open, cross-disciplinary minded and a friendly environment. At the core of ADA are the art practices of six Rotterdam based artists (Deirdre M. Donoghue, Esmé Valk, Gerwin Luijendijk, Maja Bekan, Margo Onnes, Sjoerd Westbroek) who also run ADA’s public program.

Duba SambolecVideo Evening #03: Contextual Face

Artists: Dominique Buchtala (DE), Vesna Bukovec (SI), Ana Grobler (SI), Guerrilla Girls (US), Michelle Handelman (US), Kika Nicolela (BR), Grace Graupe Pillard (US), Angelika Rinnhofer (DE/US), Duba Sambolec (SI/NO), Evelin Stermitz (AT/SI), Alison Williams (ZA), Liana Zanfrisco (IT)
Selected by: Evelin Stermitz (AT/SI)
Tootal screening time: 00:41:42

For the third Video Evening KOLEKTIVA invited artist and curator Evelin Stermitz to prepare a curated selection from ArtFem.TV, her online television programming presenting art and feminism.

About the selection
Various women artists are including their own face as an iconographic object and symbol bearer in their art works, or using the face of others, the former photographic portrait, transcending into the moving image. This video series addresses variant meanings of the woman’s face in a context of women’s issues when embedded in a socio-cultural heritage. The face can be seen as more then a signifier of our cultural norms, in the context of women often foregrounded not only as indicator for individual remembrance, not only associated to cultural norms such as beauty stereotypes, objectification of commodified women in advertisements, and not only as a surface for self-creation when mirroring the self to others, but read as political text and statement in a broader context.
